Tearing Eyes
While many people complain of excessively dry eyes, some are struggling with completely opposite problems. The eyes are constantly tearing with constant wiping and rubbing. Patients are often stressed with excessive tearing of the eyes if their jobs require them to meet clients, be in public interviews and so on. As such, these patients would be the first to seek medical help while some other patients ignore their conditions till it is often too late.
Tearing eyes are symptoms of many diseases. They all share the faulty transport of secreted tears.
Tears are important for the eyes. They ensure that the eye is sufficiently supplied with oxygen and nutrients. The tear fluid is produced in the lacrimal gland in the upper outer corner of eye and distributed over the lids on the eye.
Normally, the liquid on the two channels is taken away tears. You start at the two puncta on each side in the upper and lower inner corner of eye. Both channels flow together into a sac at the inner canthus and from there through the nasal passage in the nose and throat. If this passages are blocked, excessive tearing will occur. Your doctor would usually first rule out foreign body in the eye and conjunctivitis which can cause watery eyes.
Some of the causes would be a blockage of the lacrimal drainage system or the senile ectropion. Your doctor would check tear flow via a simple and painless saline solution injection into the lacrimal drainage system. This solution simulates the tear fluid of the eye. In an intact tear system, the fluid flows directly out into the nose.
